Temporary Foreign Worker Program
The Canadian Foreign Worker Program is designed to allow Canadian employers to hire foreign nationals to fill temporary labor shortages in Canada. The program aims to ensure that Canadian employers have access to skilled workers when no Canadians or permanent residents are available to fill job vacancies.
To participate in the program, Canadian employers must meet certain requirements, including:
- Obtaining a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC)
- Offering a wage and working conditions that are comparable to those offered to Canadian workers
- Providing evidence that reasonable efforts have been made to hire Canadian citizens or permanent residents before turning to foreign workers
Foreign workers who wish to work in Canada under the Foreign Worker Program must have a valid job offer from a Canadian employer and meet certain eligibility criteria, including:
- Meeting the requirements for the job, such as education, skills, and experience
- Obtaining a work permit from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)
- Being admissible to Canada, meaning they are not inadmissible due to criminal or medical reasons
